Residential Backflow Testing
The State of Illinois requires Annual Backflow Testing to insure your safety by protecting drinking water from harmful toxins. Skirmont Mechanical provides residential installation, testing, and repair of backflow assemblies.
A backflow device is designed to ONLY allow water to flow in one direction. In order to make sure that your Device is working properly, a State Certified Licensed Plumber will have to Test your Backflow Device with an approved calibrated Pressure Gauge to assure your Device is in Compliance.
After completing your Backflow Inspection, a copy of the Test Report is left on the Device and the Tech will bring your Results back to our Office where they are then Submitted to your Municipality for their Records, usually within 24-48 hours of the Completion of the Test.
Getting your Backflow Device Tested Annually is not Only a Requirement, that keeps you in compliance with state and local regulations. But it also gives you and your family peace of mind that your Drinking Water is Properly Protected.

Commercial Backflow Testing
If your commercial property already has a backflow preventer, then you’re responsible for having it tested annually. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) holds local water suppliers responsible for maintaining a certain level of purity in the potable water supply. Therefore, state regulations and local municipalities require backflow preventers to be installed and tested Annually in most types of commercial properties.
Backflow preventers are commonly placed at each cross-connection point found within the plumbing systems of apartments, condominiums, food establishments, and most public and commercial places. A backflow preventer is required to be installed at most commercial properties. It prevents the contamination of the potable water supply.
Types of businesses that are required to install a backflow preventer include:
Restaurants
Dry cleaners
Medical offices
Funeral homes
Beauty and nail salons
Car washes
Multi-tenant retail space
Any commercial building three stories or taller
Any commercial space with a dedicated fire service line / sprinkler system
Churches with baptismal pools
Other businesses may be required to install a backflow preventer based on backflow hazard.
Our customized computer system will track inspection dates for you while maintaining a history of all services performed. This helps ensure you are in compliance with local water and building departments, as well as the State of Illinois.

FAQ
DOES THE WATER NEED TO BE TURNED OFF ON DOMESTIC LINES?
Yes, the water does need to be turned off but for a very brief period of time. Usual testing will take just a few minutes of water shutoff which will show little or no interference to the water supply.
DOES THE PRICE OF THE TEST VARY BASED ON THE SIZE OF THE DEVICE?
No. Unlike our competitors we charge per test not by the size of the device. It is the same price no matter what the model or size so there is no need for different pricing structures.
WHAT IS DONE AFTER THE TEST HAS BEEN COMPLETED?
We will contact your local authorities with the results from the test to assure you are in compliance with local codes. A copy of the results will be left on the device for proof of test and a copy will be sent to you for your records as well.
WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT ARE ACCEPTED?
We accept cash, check, or credit cards.
WHY DOES THE BACKFLOW TEST NEED TO BE COMPLETED ANNUALLY?
State law requires the test to be completed once a year. This ensues the backflow preventer is working correctly to prevent any contaminants from reaching your drinking water. Any water passing thru the backflow preventer will be kept in its proper place and not be brought back into the domestic line for contamination.
WHAT IF THE DEVICE IS LOCATED INSIDE?
If the device is located anywhere inside the location and appointment needs to be made and someone over the age of 18 must be present to have the test completed by our certified technicians. The test can be completed anytime during the year according to your retest dates by the village.
IF THE DEVICE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE DO I NEED TO HAVE IT ON?
Yes, for all outside irrigation tests the system must be on for the season for the test to be completed successfully.
WHERE IS MY FIRE PREVENTION DEVICE LOCATED?
All fire protection backflow preventers are located inside the location. This will insure the device will not freeze year round to maintain your fire protection needs.
WHERE IS MY IRRIGATION DEVICE LOCATED?
Typically irrigation backflow preventers are located outside of the home or business to make testing as easy as possible. Some devices are located inside if requested by the customer.
